Church choir invited to D.C.

The Presbyterian Church of Pittsburg (KS) chancel choir and the Pittsburg High School Encore, both under the direction of Susan Laushman, have received personal invitations by composer Dr. John Leavitt to sing at Kennedy Center, Washington, D.C., in May. Dr. Leavitt formerly taught at Friends University in Wichita and was one of Laushman's professors there. She has appeared with him three times at Carnegie Hall in New York City. "Susan's group is always exemplary, very strong musicians, and so we extended the invitation," said Leavitt, who was in Pittsburg recently conducting a choir clinic at the church. The trip is scheduled May 21-25, including rehearsals with Leavitt, nationally known composer, teacher, church musician and conductor. "We'll join with other singers from across the country to form a 200-voice choir for the premiere of Dr. Leavitt's work, 'Creation's Alleluia' on May 24 in Kennedy Center," Laushman said. "The choir will be accompanied by the Kennedy Symphony Orchestra. The concert will be part of the Manhattan Concert Productions' Masterworks Choir Series."
